You have a hot water tank in your home because you want to have hot water when you need it. You know that the tank size limits how much hot water you can have at any given time, but there are instances when your hot water tank struggles to produce hot water at all. When you have water not getting hot enough in Covington, GA, it’s time to call and schedule a water heater maintenance appointment.
There are many times that we can make repairs to address the problem without having to replace your entire water heater. Of course, if your water heater is up in age, it may very well be time for a replacement, but we can talk to you about your options during our assessment. Keep reading to learn more about the reasons that your water heater might be running out of hot water.
Demand
We already mentioned this above. If there is too much demand placed on your water heater, it won’t be able to keep up with your heating needs. You can combat this by spreading out hot water usage throughout your day. Schedule showers among your family members and plan when you will wash clothes and dishes using hot water. This is a great way to maximize the hot water available without leaving someone disappointed because they did not have access to the hot water when they needed it.
Thermostat
There’s also a chance that you don’t have hot water because the attached thermostat is not working correctly. Sometimes your water heater thermostat can get miscalibrated or the batteries may run low. When this happens, it can’t signal for your water heater to heat water appropriately. You may be left with water that is not as warm as you like.
Of course, you can always test your thermostat settings by turning them up a little to see if that makes a difference. But keep in mind that even if you see a positive difference, you still need to give our team a call. You shouldn’t have to persistently turn up the temperature to have water that is hot enough.
Water Heater Age
Sometimes water heaters lose their effectiveness as they age. You can expect your water heater to last for around 10 years. Once you reach that 10-year mark, it’s time to begin considering a replacement. This is especially true if you are having issues with not having enough hot water. We would be happy to assess your water heater and offer maintenance suggestions.
You may not be completely ready to install a new water heater quite yet and need time to prepare and save. There may be some minor repairs that we can make to improve your water heater output so that you can keep it for a while longer before investing in a total replacement.
Dip Tube
When your water heater fills back up with cold water, the cold water filters through a dip tube that pushes the cold water to the bottom of the tank so that it does not interfere with hot water entering your home. However, if the dip tube is cracked, it may allow cold water to mix in with hot water, thus making it a lukewarm temperature. Luckily, this is usually an easy fix. Our team is able to replace the cracked dip tube with a new one to solve the problem and your hot water should be in ample supply again.
Sediment
It’s also possible that you have mineral sediment from hard water buildup inside of your tank that is blocking the heating elements from adequately being able to heat the water to your desired temperature. The only way to solve this issue is to flush out the water heater and eliminate the sediment. Of course, you want to keep in mind that if you don’t invest in a whole house water filter to eliminate hard water sediment, you will need to flush your water heater at least once per year.
