Manage Humidity Levels

Moisture is one of the main factors that mold needs to thrive and develop into an infestation. There are many times that your air conditioner provides the perfect factors once moisture is introduced to the mix. The solution to preventing mold may be as simple as managing humidity inside your home.

Your air conditioner helps to reduce humidity a little, but not enough. If your home’s humidity is consistently high, chances increase dramatically for mold infestations. By investing in a portable or whole-house dehumidifier you can lower the amount of moisture inside your home and lessen the chances of mold spores in the air taking hold and spreading.

Prevent Water Leaks

You can also prevent additional moisture from entering the air by taking care of the condensate drain line inside of your air conditioner. The condensate drain line is where humidity collects to form droplets during each cooling cycle that your AC system completes. The droplets then drain outside of your home near the outdoor portion of your AC unit.

To prevent leaks, pour vinegar into the condensate drain line every month. Vinegar helps prevent clogs by rinsing away dust and destroying mold spores. If a mold infestation develops in the line, it could quickly become significant enough to block water flow from exiting your home. Instead, the water will back up in the line and spill back out.

Boost Indoor Air Quality

There are always mold spores in the air around us. However, the spores are dormant and don’t pose much of a risk unless the proper conditions are met for the spores to attach to a surface and develop into an infestation.

When you invest in a whole-house air filtration system like an air purifier, 99.9% of mold spores get eliminated from the air. This greatly reduces the chances of a mold infestation since there aren’t as many spores in the air to begin with.
